An Eclectic “Mix-Tape”

I absolutely, positively, completely, totally love music! With broad tastes, I listen to everything from classical to heavy metal. So, I thought I’d put together an eclectic, little “mix-tape” (emphasis on the “mix”) for music lovers! I hope you vibe with a song or two!

You can skip to the bottom for the full YouTube playlist but you’ll miss my creative commentary in the video captions. 😉

  1. “Never My Love” by The Association (1967)
A tender ballad that captures the essence of California’s Laurel Canyon during the mid-60s. This tune was recently featured in the (amazing) series Outlander.
  1. “Human” by Chip, featuring Maleek Berry and Kranium (2018)
A sexy, makes-you-want-to-shake-what-your-mama-gave-you song that’s shockingly under-known. Chip is a fantastic British rapper with a long list of stellar collabs.
  1. “Overgrown” by Mountains of the Moon (2018)
A moody vibe that builds in intensity, taking you on an emotional indie-rock-and-roller-coaster.
  1. “Carry Fire” by Robert Plant (2017)
Yes, Robert Plant as in the lead singer of Led Zeppelin! This song is off his Americana album by the same name. It’s a whimsical twist of ethnic roots and rock.
  1. “Window to the Sky” by Kim Churchill (2014)
This is Aussie indie-folk at its finest! Kim’s distinct blend of heart and soul is evident in his lyrics and melodies which tell raw and real stories that speak to our humanness.
  1. “Mad as a Hatter” by Larkin Poe
The live version of this song is frankly mind-blowing as they tell a personal tale about battles against mental illness. The Larkin Poe ladies are some of the finest storytellers you’ll find in the roots rock world.
  1. “Annie” by Young in the City (2016)
Led by Noah Gunderson, this band has nostalgic traces of Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, Bryan Adams, and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. “Annie” is the kind of slow and steady love song that you listen to during a summer sunset. (P.S. The live version on YouTube is also worth checking out!)
  1. “Three Seed” by Silversun Pickups (2006)
As my go-to song for walks in the rain, “Three Seed” is simultaneously sullen and seductive. It’s another alternative work of genius from Silversun Pickups, if you ask me.
  1. “Love Has All Been Done Before” by Jade Bird (2018)
Jade is a unique talent whose vocals have been described as “raw and robust” by Rolling Stone. Listening to her makes me feel like a complete bad-ass, f**k-the-haters female but her music is so not gender-exclusive.
  1. “Druide” by KRUCIPÜSK (2004)
Okay, this is a total vibe change! KRUCIPÜSK is a Czech alternative metal group. I listen to this during my lifting sessions to get pumped up (even though I don’t have a clue what they’re saying).
  1. “Follow the Sun” by Xavier Rudd (2012)
This is just a quintessential feel-good song! When I’m out in nature, Xavier Rudd’s music is a complement and my soul is in celebration.
  1. “Hotter Than Hell” by Dua Lipa (Matoma Remix) (2016)
Somehow, Dua Lipa transfers her hotness to anyone who listens to this tune. Seriously! I’m not a big party person… until this song comes on. I’m a fan of the original and Matoma remix.
  1. “Taro” by Alt-J (2012)
Honestly, Alt-J can do no wrong in my book and “Taro” is one piece of evidence as it chronicles a mid-20th century love story about two photographers.
  1. Me Gusta” by Mikolas Josef (2018)
Here’s another incredible Czech artist. (Can you tell I lived in the Czech Republic for a stint?) Mikolas is upbeat, fun, and international, singing primarily in English and some Spanish. Oh, also, he’s an accomplished musician and dancer. So, yeah.
  1. “Sisters of the Moon” by Fleetwood Mac (1979)
Although less known than “Gypsy” and “Dreams”, “Sisters of the Moon” is a classic tune that sings to my inner enchantress.

16. “Lie” by shallou, featuring Riah (2018)

Not only is shallou an extraordinary singer and producer, he’s also an environmentalist.

Let me know in the comments which was your favorite and give me your own suggestions!
